Professor Carolyn Mountford

Professor Carolyn Mountford is Director of Spectroscopy, Department of Radiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Visiting Professor of Radiology at the Harvard Medical School in the USA. She was the first Head of the Department of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (MRM) at the University of Sydney, the first University department of its kind worldwide.

Carolyn has spent the last two decades working with scientists, physicians, surgeons, mathematicians and pathologists developing magnetic resonance spectroscopy as an adjunct to and in some cases a replacement for histopathology. Lead by Professors Mountford and Peter Russell, the team identified early stages of human cancers not detectable by conventional methods. More recently she has extended the use of magnetic resonance to new fields including infectious diseases and pain management. The IMRR was made a Federal Government Innovation Flagship in 1996 and an NH&MRC Clinical Centre of Excellence in 1998. She has registered 4 world-wide patents

Carolyn Mountford, is a Foundation Fellow of the Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), and received the NSW Cancer Council's inaugural ‘Pioneer of Hope Award’ and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' Graham Coupland Medal. As a member of the Australian Science Engineering and Technology Council (ASTEC), Dr Mountford chaired an ASTEC study on the development of guidelines for the ethics and scientific management of Australian world heritage and protected areas.
